So at least I wasn’t totally wrong when I said to “bet the field . . .â€
LEADERBOARD: 113th U.S. Open (Details courtesy of USA Today’s and ESPN’s most recent updates)
We’ll follow along with Woods, who has never won a major from outside the top five entering the weekend, hole-by-hole throughout the round.
No. 13, Par 3, 98 yards: Lots of birdies have been made at this pitch and putt hole, playing at under 100 yards on Saturday. No birdie for Tiger. A par, and he stays at +7.
LEADERS: Luke Donald birdies 10 to join Charl Schwartzel at -2.
No. 12, Par 4, 403 yards: It just isn’t working for Woods.. Another bogey, and he is +7.
LEADERS: Charl Schwartzel makes birdie at 10 and moves to -2, one shot better than Luke Donald.
No. 11, Par 4, 370 yards: Woods had another good chance at birdie, and another chance missed. The putter is not working. Another par on a scoring hole, and he stays at +6.
LEADER: John Senden bogeys 8 and is back to even; Luke Donald birdies 8 just a short time later, joining Charl Schwartzel at the top at -1.
No. 10, Par 4, 280 yards: Yes, that’s right — 280 yards. A driveable par-4, but not for Tiger. He laid up and then, from 100 yards, hit a lousy approach. This is likely to be another missed opportunity, and he is doing nothing on these short holes that offer chances to score. Woods’ long birdie putt had the right pace but the wrong line. He three-putt for bogey and is at +6. 18 putt in 10 holes. The leaders aren’t running away from him, but he’s running away from them.
LEADERS: John Senden birdies 7 to get back to -1, joining Charl Schwartzel.
No. 9, Par 3, 231 yards: Woods lands his tee shot safely on the green, but he has to make a putt. And he doesn’t done a lot of that. And he can’t make the birdie putt again. Par, stays at +5. McIlroy makes bogey and is back at +6.
LEADERS: John Senden drops back to even par with a bogey on No. 6, and Charl Schwartzel makes birdie at 7 to join Luke Donald at -1.
No. 8, Par 4, 351 yards: Woods finds the fairway off the tee. His approach from 144 yards finds the green but skips away from the hole, farther than he had hoped. Not an easy birdie putt. No go. Par for Woods, who stays at +5. McIlroy also makes par to stay at +5.
MEANWHILE: John Senden and Luke Donald lead at -1.
