Most technologists believe real artificial intelligence is at least 10-20 years in the future. After reading this piece about â€œchatbots,â€ however, Iâ€™m starting to wonder if the future isnâ€™t arriving a tad sooner than expected. Who knew, for example, that chatbots are now actually FLIRTING WITH EACH OTHER? Or that you can buy a private army of chatbots for a mere $250??? (Note to self: place order first thing tomorrow morning . . .)
Regardless of what all this portends for intelligent computing, there actually is a very serious back-story here regarding everything from espionage to the theft of valuable intellectual property. Not to mention that most people using online dating sites probably arenâ€™t looking for imaginary companionship. From what Iâ€™m told, there are actually better websites for that sort of thing (admittedly somewhat less technological).
